Out today – Santogold (album)

Santogold - Santogold (2008)

She’s been pretty hyped over the last few weeks, both from Radio 1 and other music sites such as Hype Machine. I can’t say I have it yet, but I definitely intend to, after picking up a few of the smattering of tracks and awesome remixes spread all over the net.

Santogold – L.E.S. Artistes White’s style has been compared often to that of M.I.A..[4][15] Santogold said of the M.I.A. comparisons: “We’ve worked with some of the same people and … have similar influences. But the way we go around implementing those influences are very different, and I am in no way influenced by what the press are saying.”[9] Additionally, some of Santogold’s material has been compared to that of the Pixies,[15] which Santogold agrees with.[9] Santogold has also said that she is inspired by 1980s pop music. “I felt that a lot of pop music from the ’80s had a depth to it, and I hope to bring back some more good pop songs.”[9] Santogold has made a point of not performing R&B or rap like other “brown girls”, saying she is “not like Ciara.” [wiki]

Death Cab For Cutie – Narrow Stairs

Narrow Stairs

Well… it’s out tomorrow! Make sure you grab a copy either from iTunes or Amazon (if you’re the CD type).

Look out for a review up here soon, but for now, there is an interesting one at Rolling Stone (4/5):

“Elaborate multitrack recording has been replaced with the sound of a band in a room: drum hits elbowing through overmodulating bass lines, feedback squalls obscuring piano and vocals, clotting the air like smoke. The sense of claustrophobia even extends to the breaks between tracks, which are nonexistent or fleeting; songs are cut off by noise bursts or begin with the lurch of a tape-machine capstan. This fits the material — the album is as dark as anything the band has done. The most glaring example is the single “I Will Possess Your Heart,” which begins with nearly five wordless minutes of midtempo groove-building before becoming a love letter from a stalker.”

Great stuff!

Hello sweet sweet blogging world

22 04 2008

Well, here goes then – my first entry into my first blog ever. This whole wordpress thing seems kinda cool, so I’ll try to stick with it over the next few weeks and see if I actually get into it or not!

Anyways, I’m here to talk about music, so today I want you guys to check out (if you haven’t already) M83. This band (or guy, as is correct) has been around since about 2001, but has just released a new album. How would you describe it? erm.. anthemic, electronic slightly orchestral in places, with some spoken lyrics (dont cringe, it’s not how it sounds!) Good stuff all the same.

If you’re on iTunes I recommend grabbing one of their older albums, “Before the dawn heals us” which is currently going for about £5. Bargain! Then check out their myspace to get a feel for the stuff from the new album, “Saturdays = Youth”.

I seem to have found an interest in “epic” sounding music, if you get what I mean. Big, emotional sounds, lots of reverb, powerful chord changes etc. Which makes M83 right up my street!
